The convertible is also the only first-generation Metro to offer an airbag.
2000 CHEVY METRO 4 DOOR MANUAL
All of the Metros at this time had three cylinder engines with a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission. The XFi’s engine has less horsepower than the base and LSi and achieved startling gas mileage 53 MPG (city) 58 MPG (highway). Metros came in three trim levels: XFi, Base or LSi. In 1990, a convertible was available but was phased out after 1993. The first generation was offered in three and five-door hatchback models as well as a 4-door notchback sedan that was only sold in Canada. In Canada, another import marque, Asüna, was introduced in 1992 to provide Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealers access to a similar range of import vehicles.īut back to the Metro. In the 1990’s consumer interest in the economy compact market faded, and the last vehicle of the former Geo line, the Tracker, was discontinued in 2004. Its original slogan was “Get to know Geo.” Formed by GM to compete with the growing small import market of the mid 1980s, the line continued through the 1997 model year, after which the remaining models were given the Chevrolet name. Geo was a marque of small cars made by General Motors as a subdivision of its Chevrolet division from 1989 to 1997. The original Suzuki Cultus was sold in North America as the Chevrolet Sprint from 1985-1988 before becoming the Metro. Geo Metro convertibles and early Geo Trackers were built by Suzuki in Japan.īorn to compete against the cheap econo-boxes that were the Ford Festiva and Renault LeCar, the closest we have come in the states since production ended in 2001 would be the Chevrolet Aveo, which may as well be a reskinned Metro. The exceptions, the Spectrum and Storm, were entirely manufactured by Isuzu in Japan. The Prizm was produced at the GM/Toyota joint-venture NUMMI assembly plant in Fremont, California, and the Metro and Tracker were produced at the GM/Suzuki joint-venture CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. Geo models were manufactured by GM in joint ventures with three Japanese automakers. The small size and light weight make for a noisy, bouncy ride, and SUVs look like 18-wheelers by comparison. The Geo Metro was born of a union formed in 1981 between GM and Suzuki (and Isuzu) allowing GM to market the Suzuki Cultus as a captive import internationally under more than a dozen nameplates including the Geo Metro, Chevrolet Sprint, Pontiac Firefly and Holden Barina. Metro offers low prices and high fuel economy, but be prepared for major sacrifices in room, comfort and refinement. The LSi hatchback and sedan use a 79-horsepower 1.3-liter that is available with manual or automatic transmission horsepower. The EPA estimates are 36 city / 42 highway. The base hatchback’s 55-horsepower 1.0-liter three-cylinder teams with a five-speed manual transmission to return the highest mileage of any gas-powered engine. All models ride on 13-inch wheels and tires.

Swift uses a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, and Metro has the same engine plus a 1.0-liter three-cylinder.īoth body styles seat four, and despite a 15-inch longer body, the sedan’s interior dimensions are similar to the hatchback’s. Swift comes only as a hatchback, and Metro comes as a hatchback and sedan. Though the Metro is built from the same design as the Swift, it has significant differences.

GM holds a stake in Suzuki, and the companies also share the Chevrolet Tracker/Suzuki Vitara sport utility vehicle. It is similar to the Suzuki Swift and is built in Canada at a plant jointly owned by GM and Suzuki. Metro is the smallest car sold by General Motors in the United States and, with a base price of $9,185, the least expensive.
